Button Carbon Project 2

Project Information:

Button Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon project located approximately 6km north-east of the small town of Pingrup, in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Registered in March 2023, the project covers a 442-hectare area within the Shire of Kent, roughly 80km east of the regional center of Katanning.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method requires landowners to implement new land management activities to sequester carbon in the soil, which is then quantified through soil sampling and modelling. For this specific project, the proponent, Agriprove Solutions, has indicated activities including the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address nutrient deficiencies, the retention of crop stubble, and a conversion to reduced or no-tillage practices. These activities are designed to minimize soil disturbance and increase biomass return to the soil, thereby boosting organic carbon levels.

The local environment is typical of the Western Australian Wheatbelt, characterized by a semi-arid Mediterranean climate with an annual rainfall of approximately 300mm to 350mm, falling mostly in winter. The landscape is dominated by broadacre cropping (wheat, barley, canola) and sheep grazing. The soils in this vicinity are generally sandy duplex soils (sand over clay), often associated with mallee vegetation, which can be susceptible to issues such as salinity and waterlogging if not carefully managed.

Agriprove Solutions, the proponent, is a prominent developer in the Australian market known for utilizing satellite data and advanced soil testing to streamline the credit generation process. The project naming convention suggests it is likely associated with a local landholder family named Button, operating alongside a "Button Carbon Project 1" or similar adjacent undertaking.
