Bury Carbon Project 5

Project Information:

Bury Carbon Project 5 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Tatiara District of South Australia, situated approximately 10km southeast of Wolseley and near the Victorian border. Registered in May 2023, the project covers 311 hectares of agricultural land in a region locally known as the "Good Country" (Tatiara), which is renowned for its productive mixed farming systems.

The project operates under the Carbon Farming Initiative, Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology is a "hybrid" approach that combines physical soil core sampling with computer modelling to estimate carbon stocks over time, reducing the cost of frequent physical measurement. As an Agriprove-managed project, it likely employs their standard model of partnering with landholders to implement regenerative practices, such as applying specific nutrient fertilisers, transitioning to no-tillage cropping, and retaining stubble, to boost soil organic carbon levels.

The Tatiara region typically experiences a Mediterranean climate with an annual rainfall of approximately 450mm to 500mm. The landscape is characterized by a mix of soil types, often featuring the "gilgai" undulating clay soils (cracking clays) and sandy loams over clay that are typical of the border districts. These soils are highly responsive to management changes, making them suitable candidates for soil carbon projects aimed at improving water retention and soil health while generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
