BCP Energy Reductions Project

Project Information:
BCP Energy Reductions Project is an Animal effluent management project located in the North Burnett region of Queensland, near the town of Monto, approximately 170km west of Bundaberg. It was registered in September 2022. Because this is a facility-based infrastructure project, a specific project area size in hectares is not applicable or publicly mapped.
Animal effluent management projects involve capturing and destroying methane generated by the breakdown of animal waste, which is typical for intensive livestock operations such as piggeries and dairies. The standard requirements of this methodology mandate the installation of new infrastructure, such as covered anaerobic lagoons or engineered digesters, to collect biogas and combust it through a flaring system or power generator, actively displacing the baseline emissions of open effluent ponds.
The North Burnett and Monto areas are well-known for beef cattle farming, agricultural cropping, and intensive livestock facilities like pig farming. The region features a sub-tropical climate classified by medium, summer-dominant rainfall. Soils in the area generally consist of fertile alluvial loams along the Burnett River systems, transitioning into heavier clays and sandy loams in the broader grazing areas.
This project was set up by BCP Energy Pty Ltd to treat effluent by aggressively destroying harmful greenhouse gases that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. By collecting and combusting the methane at this new emissions destruction treatment facility, the project generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and is scheduled to run its crediting period through to December 2035.
