BCP Energy Reductions Project

Project Information:

BCP Energy Reductions Project is an animal effluent management project located in the North Burnett region of Queensland, specifically within the 4630 postcode area which centers around the town of Monto, approximately 170km west of Bundaberg. Registered in September 2022, the project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Animal Effluent Management) Methodology Determination 2019.

The North Burnett region is a significant agricultural hub characterized by beef cattle grazing, dairy farming, and fodder cropping. The local environment typically experiences a sub-tropical climate with summer-dominant rainfall, averaging around 650mm to 700mm annually. The landscape features diverse soil types, ranging from fertile alluvial loams along the Burnett River tributaries to cracking clays and basalt-derived soils in the surrounding hills, which support intensive agriculture and grazing operations.

This project is designed to capture and destroy methane emissions generated from animal effluent, likely at a piggery or dairy facility. By installing a covered anaerobic lagoon or engineered digester, the project prevents methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from releasing into the atmosphere. Instead, the gas is collected and combusted, converting it into less harmful carbon dioxide and water. While the project has a crediting period running from January 2024 to December 2035, no Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) have been issued as of late 2025.
