Blewett Carbon Project 8

Project Information:

Blewett Carbon Project 8 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Western Downs region of Queensland, approximately 30 kilometers east of the rural locality of Westmar. Registered on December 9, 2022, the project covers a land area of 423.27 hectares. The region is predominantly utilized for cattle grazing and broadacre cropping, capitalizing on the fertile plains characteristic of the Darling Downs and Western Downs areas.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021. This high-integrity methodology requires the proponent to physically measure soil carbon levels down to one meter deep to establish a baseline. Landholders must then implement new management activities, such as establishing multispecies pastures or altering stocking intensity, to increase soil organic carbon stocks. Credits are issued based on the measured increase in carbon over time, minus any emissions from the project activities.

Environmentally, the Western Downs region is classified as semi-arid to subtropical, typically receiving between 500mm and 600mm of rainfall annually. The landscape is often defined by Grey Vertosols (cracking clay soils), which are highly fertile and capable of holding significant moisture, making them well-suited for soil carbon projects. Given the "8" in the project title and the involvement of AgriProve, a leading developer in this sector, this site is likely part of a larger aggregated estate or family farming operation engaging in regenerative agriculture practices to improve drought resilience and soil health.
