Holding Carbon Project

Project Information:

Holding Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Mary Valley region of Queensland, specifically near the locality of Tuchekoi, approximately 25km south of Gympie. Registered in September 2022, the project covers a relatively focused area of 62 hectares. The surrounding Mary Valley is a well-known agricultural hub, traditionally utilized for dairy, beef cattle grazing, and mixed cropping due to its productive landscape.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method credits landholders for increasing the amount of carbon stored in their soil through active management changes. In this specific instance, the project activities involve applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, rejuvenating pastures through seeding, and altering grazing intensity to improve vegetation cover. These activities are designed to maximize photosynthetic activity, which pumps liquid carbon into the soil profile.

Environmentally, the Tuchekoi area is well-suited for soil carbon projects due to its favourable climate. The region is classified as high rainfall, receiving an annual average of approximately 1100mm, which provides the consistent moisture required for rapid pasture growth and microbial activity in the soil. The local terrain typically features fertile alluvial soils along the river flats and loams to clays (Dermosols and Vertosols) on the undulating slopes, offering a strong baseline for sequestration efforts. The proponent, Agriprove Solutions, creates these projects using a partnership model that streamlines the complex measurement and reporting requirements for landholders.
