Bury Carbon Project 2

Project Information:
Bury Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Tatiara District of South Australia, approximately 7 kilometers west of the town of Bordertown. Registered in May 2023, the project covers a land area of roughly 240 hectares. The region is a significant agricultural hub known as the "Good Country," primarily utilized for mixed farming operations that combine broadacre cropping (such as wheat, barley, and canola) with livestock grazing (sheep and cattle).
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration methodology. This framework allows land managers to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by changing land management practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. To generate credits, the proponent must demonstrate a measurable increase in soil carbon stocks over time compared to a baseline, using a combination of physical soil sampling and modeled estimates.
Environmentally, the Bordertown area experiences a Mediterranean climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 460mm, falling mostly in winter. The local landscape typically features fertile clay-loam soils over a limestone base, which are well-suited to the project's aim of building soil health. The specific activities undertaken to drive carbon sequestration include addressing nutrient deficiencies through targeted fertiliser application, transitioning from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage systems to minimize soil disturbance, and retaining crop stubble to protect the soil surface and return organic matter to the ground.
