Road transportation fuel efficiency project
ERF176274
Project Information:
The Road transportation fuel efficiency project is a transport-based emissions reduction project registered in September 2022. It is an aggregated project managed by Fuel and Infrastructure Management Australasia Pty Limited. Unlike land-based carbon projects that operate on specific properties, this project operates on a "Nation Wide" basis, encompassing a fleet of land vehicles moving across Australian transport networks.
This project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Land and Sea Transport) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits the reduction of emissions intensity per unit of transport service, effectively rewarding operators for moving freight or passengers more efficiently. Activities permitted under this method include modifying existing vehicles to be more aerodynamic or efficient, changing fuel sources to lower-emission alternatives, and altering operational practices to reduce fuel consumption.
Given the mobile and national nature of this project, standard environmental metrics such as soil type and rainfall classification are not applicable. The project's "environment" is the Australian road network. While the physical assets move nationwide, the proponent is administratively based in the Greater Sydney region (postcode 2765).
The primary goal of this project is to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by demonstrating measurable improvements in fuel efficiency across the aggregated group of vehicles. By grouping individual vehicles into a single project, the proponent can achieve the scale necessary to make carbon crediting viable for transport operations that might otherwise be too small to participate individually.
