Messner Carbon Project 5

Messner Carbon Project 5 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, near the locality of Warralakin. It sits approximately 45km northeast of Mukinbudin and 60km north of Merredin. Registered in June 2022, the project initially covered 1,195 hectares but currently spans 1062.34 hectares following an August 2026 variation where specific areas of land were removed from the project.

Soil carbon projects operating under the 2021 Measurement and Models methodology aim to build soil carbon stocks through specific management changes. This method requires establishing a strict baseline of soil carbon through physical sampling and maintaining the stored carbon for a nominated permanence period, typically 25 or 100 years. For this specific project, the primary management activity involves applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address a material soil deficiency. By optimizing nutrient levels, the project seeks to increase plant growth and root biomass, which in turn draws more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil.

The surrounding Wheatbelt region is characterized by a semi-arid Mediterranean climate with low annual rainfall typically averaging around 300mm, most of which falls during the cool winter months. The area's dominant land uses are broadacre cropping and sheep grazing. Soils in this region are generally described as sandy loams and red earths, often found on undulating plains interspersed with granite outcrops. While productive under careful management, these soils historically have low organic carbon levels, making them highly suitable candidates for carbon sequestration efforts.

An interesting note is that Messner Carbon Project 5 is part of a massive aggregation of carbon projects in the Shire of Westonia. Managed by the proponent Agriprove Solutions, which specializes in soil carbon development, the public registry lists at least 25 identically named "Messner Carbon Projects" in Western Australia that are operating as a combined regional effort.
