Baume Carbon Project 2
ERF174881
Project Information:
Baume Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 20km southeast of Colac in the Colac Otway Shire region of Victoria. Registered on June 6, 2022, the project covers 169.73 hectares of agricultural land situated near the foothills of the Otway Ranges.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through changes in land management. In this specific case, the project aims to sequester carbon by applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil. By improving pasture health and root mass through targeted nutrition, the project seeks to draw more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil profile.
The region surrounding Colac and the Otways is a high-rainfall zone, typically receiving reliable precipitation during winter and spring, followed by drier summers. The local environment supports intensive grazing, including dairy and beef cattle farming. Soils in this area are generally productive, often consisting of volcanic basalt clays and clay loams, though they can be acidic in the higher rainfall pockets near the ranges. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a leading developer of soil carbon projects in Australia, and has a nominated permanence period of 25 years.
