Guilfoyle Carbon Project 9
ERF174883
Project Information:
Guilfoyle Carbon Project 9 is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 15km northeast of Birchip in the Mallee region of Victoria. Registered in September 2022, the project covers 130 hectares of agricultural land within the Buloke Shire. This region is a heartland for broadacre cropping and livestock grazing, characterized by vast flat plains used for the production of cereals (wheat, barley), pulses, and sheep.
The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models Methodology Determination 2021. This method involves establishing a baseline for soil carbon stocks and implementing specific management activities to increase those stocks over time. For this project, the eligible activities include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, retaining crop stubble to protect soil structure, and converting to reduced or no-tillage practices to minimize soil disturbance.
Environmentally, the Birchip area is classified as semi-arid with a low average annual rainfall of approximately 350mm to 375mm. The soils in this part of the Mallee are typically calcareous earths ("Mallee loams"), sandy loams, and areas of cracking clay (Vertosols), which can be productive but often require careful management to maintain organic matter and moisture. The project is facilitated by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent carbon service provider that aggregates multiple projects for landholders; the designation "Project 9" suggests the Guilfoyle family has registered multiple land parcels to maximize carbon credit potential across their farming operation.
