Project Information:

Hogans Pocket LFG Upgrade Project (Revoked) is a landfill gas upgrade project located at the Hogans Pocket Landfill in Eton, approximately 50km southwest of Mackay in Queensland. It was registered in December 2022 and operates within a 275ha regional landfill facility.

Landfill gas upgrade projects involve improving an existing landfill gas collection system to capture and combust methane gas generated by decomposing organic waste. By flaring the gas, the methane is converted into carbon dioxide, a significantly less potent greenhouse gas, thereby reducing the site's overall emissions.

The Mackay region is widely known for sugarcane farming, forestry, and beef cattle grazing. The area experiences a tropical climate with high rainfall, typically exceeding 1400mm annually, mostly falling during the wet season. Soils in the surrounding Connors Range vary from fertile phosphorus-rich basalts and alluvial soils in the agricultural areas to lower fertility granodiorite, sandy loams, and silty clays.

This project was established by the Mackay Regional Council to capture gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste, helping to reduce the council's carbon footprint. The Hogans Pocket Landfill itself is highly regarded, having been recognized as a runner-up in national excellence awards for its optimized, bespoke leachate management system designed to safely handle the region's extreme tropical rainfall. The carbon project was ultimately revoked under section 30 of the CFI Rule on February 18, 2026.
