Nixon Carbon Project
ERF174318
Project Information:
The Nixon Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located near the locality of Bobin, approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Wingham in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales. Registered in June 2022, the project encompasses a project area of 176.35 hectares. The surrounding region, inland from Taree, is historically characterized by diverse agricultural land uses, including beef cattle grazing, dairy farming, and timber forestry.
Operating under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models), the project aims to increase carbon stocks within the soil profile. This methodology requires project proponents to establish a baseline of soil carbon through physical sampling, implement new land management activities to sequester carbon, and conduct subsequent sampling to measure the increase. Specific activities for this project include the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies and the alteration of grazing stocking rates or intensity to improve soil health and vegetation cover.
The environmental conditions of the Mid North Coast are generally favorable for soil carbon projects due to the region's high rainfall classification, with annual precipitation often exceeding 1,000mm. The local terrain typically consists of rolling hills with soil types that range from alluvial Dermosols in valleys to Kurosols and Chromosols (clay and loam textures) on the slopes, which are capable of supporting high-biomass pastures when managed effectively. The proponent, Agriprove Solutions Co No. 1 Pty Ltd, is a special purpose vehicle of Agriprove, Australia's largest soil carbon project developer, known for utilizing digital soil assessments and multi-species pasture cropping to accelerate carbon sequestration.
