Poinsettia Resource Recovery Project

Project Information:

Poinsettia Resource Recovery Project is an alternative waste treatment (AWT) project located in the industrial suburb of Hemmant, approximately 12km east of the Brisbane CBD in Queensland. Registered in May 2022, the project is situated within the Port of Brisbane industrial precinct, a region heavily utilised for logistics, manufacturing, and heavy industry.

The project operates under the Carbon Farming Initiative (Alternative Waste Treatment) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology involves diverting mixed solid waste, that would otherwise be destined for landfill, to a specialized treatment facility. At this facility, the waste is processed to manufacture a combustible fuel substitute, often referred to as Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF) or Refuse Derived Fuel (REF). By preventing organic material from decaying in landfills, the project avoids the generation of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, while producing an alternative energy source for industrial use.

The Hemmant region experiences a humid subtropical climate with high rainfall, typical of the southeast Queensland coast. The local environment is characterised by low-lying coastal plains, and the soils are predominantly alluvial clays or reclaimed fill, reflecting the area's development near the Brisbane River delta. The project proponent, Corporate Carbon Advisory Pty Ltd, is an established participant in the Australian carbon market and holds status as a registered suitable operator for waste activities in Queensland.
