Project Information:

IWS - Dublin LFG Flaring Project is a landfill gas project located at the IWS Northern Balefill, also known as the Dublin Eco Hub, in Lower Light, South Australia. The facility is situated approximately 60km north of Adelaide on the Adelaide Plains. Registered on May 3, 2023, the project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015.

The project involves upgrading an existing gas collection system to capture and combust methane generated from both legacy and non-legacy waste at the landfill. By flaring the captured landfill gas, the project converts methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into carbon dioxide, thereby significantly reducing the facility's overall global warming potential. The project is managed by IWS Group Asset Co Pty Ltd, a major South Australian waste management operator, with Biogas Systems Australia participating as a service provider.

The Dublin region is characterized by a semi-arid, Mediterranean climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 350-400mm. The surrounding landscape consists primarily of flat agricultural land used for cereal cropping and livestock grazing. The natural soils in this area are typically calcareous red-brown earths and sandy loams, although the landfill itself utilizes engineered clay liners. The IWS Dublin Eco Hub is notable for integrating waste disposal with broader environmental initiatives, including a commercial composting facility and a dedicated conservation zone that supports the nearby Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary.
