IWS - Alternative Waste Treatment (RDF Project) (Revoked)

Project Information:

IWS - Alternative Waste Treatment (RDF Project) is an industrial waste processing project located in the suburb of Wingfield, approximately 12 kilometers north of the Adelaide CBD in South Australia. Registered in September 2022, the project was situated within a major industrial precinct known for logistics and waste management operations. The facility was designed to divert mixed solid waste that would otherwise be destined for landfill, processing it instead into a combustible fuel substitute known as Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF).

The project operated under the Alternative Waste Treatment methodology. This method provides Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to facilities that reduce methane emissions by preventing organic waste from decomposing in landfills. By diverting this waste to a treatment facility, the organic matter is processed into alternative fuels or other products, thereby avoiding the generation of landfill gas. The specific activity for this project involved the manufacture of process-engineered fuel, a technique that typically involves sorting, shredding, and dehydrating waste to create a viable energy source for industrial boilers or cement kilns.

The Wingfield region lies on the Adelaide Plains, an area characterized by a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, moderate rainfall in winter. The local environment is heavily modified for industrial use, but the underlying soils are typically coastal clays and estuarine sediments due to the site's proximity to the Barker Inlet and the Port River estuary.

On October 11, 2024, the project was revoked under Section 30 of the CFI Rule, which indicates a voluntary revocation requested by the proponent. This occurred shortly before the underlying Alternative Waste Treatment methodology was scheduled to expire in early 2025. The proponent, IWS Group, continues to operate major waste facilities in the region, including the Northern Balefill and various resource recovery centers.
