Prenti Downs Station

Project Information:

Prenti Downs Station is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the remote Mid West region of Western Australia, approximately 260km east of Wiluna and on the edge of the Little Sandy Desert. Registered in March 2022, the project covers a vast area of over 404,000 hectares.

Human-Induced Regeneration projects differ from tree planting schemes; they focus on assisting the natural regeneration of native forests by removing suppression mechanisms. In this landscape, the primary suppressor is often grazing pressure from livestock and feral animals. By managing the timing and extent of grazing, the project aims to allow native vegetation, typically Acacia species like Mulga, to regenerate and reach a forest cover density of at least 20% canopy cover.

The region is characterized by an arid, rangeland environment with low, irregular rainfall. The terrain features red sandy soils, clay pans, and saltbush scrub, typical of the Australian outback's "mulga country." The land has historically been used as a pastoral lease for cattle grazing.

A unique aspect of Prenti Downs is its reputation as one of Australia's most technologically advanced cattle stations. Managed by Jack Carmody, the station has integrated high-speed internet, remote water monitoring, and automated self-mustering yards. These "smart station" technologies directly support the carbon project's activities by allowing precise control over grazing pressure and reducing the need for physical vehicle travel across the massive property.
