Uno Station

Project Information:
Uno Station is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the Gawler Ranges of South Australia, approximately 50km northwest of the mining town of Iron Knob and roughly 100km west of the major regional city of Port Augusta. Registered in March 2022, this massive project covers 118,267 hectares of the Pastoral Unincorporated Area. The surrounding region is defined by vast, arid landscapes primarily utilized for extensive pastoral grazing, with the property itself being part of a larger aggregation known for running sheep.
The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which involves regenerating permanent native forests by ceasing or managing suppression activities, typically grazing by livestock or feral animals. In this specific instance, the project activities focus on managing the timing and extent of grazing to allow native vegetation, likely Acacia woodlands (such as Mulga) and chenopod shrublands, to regenerate. Ideally, this increases the carbon stored in the landscape while improving biodiversity and soil health.
Environmentally, the region is classified as semi-arid, receiving a low average annual rainfall of approximately 200mm to 300mm. The terrain includes the rugged topography of the Uno Range, with soils varying from skeletal rocky earths on the ridges to deep red sandy loams and calcareous clays in the valleys. A notable aspect of this property is its management by Nonning Pastoral; Uno Station is utilized for certified organic lamb production, highlighting the potential for carbon projects to co-exist with sustainable, high-value agriculture. Historically, the site has also been subject to mineral exploration, with geological surveys in the 1970s identifying thorium anomalies near the homestead.
