Wilkurra Station

Project Information:

Wilkurra Station is a significant Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the semi-arid rangelands of Western New South Wales. The project is situated approximately 50 kilometers northeast of the township of Pooncarie and sits within the Wentworth Shire Council area. Registered on March 22, 2022, the project covers a massive expanse of 45,759.95 hectares, reflecting the large-scale pastoral nature of the region.

The surrounding region is traditionally defined by extensive grazing operations, primarily for sheep, cattle, and rangeland goats. The landscape is characterized by its semi-arid climate, receiving an average annual rainfall of approximately 270mm to 290mm. The terrain typically consists of red loam soils with sandy rises and calcareous earth, supporting vegetation such as Mulga, Belah, Rosewood, and Chenopod shrublands (saltbush and bluebush).

This project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which involves changing land management practices to allow native forests to regenerate. Specifically, the project activity involves the exclusion of livestock to remove the pressure that previously suppressed vegetation growth. By allowing in-situ seed sources (including rootstock and lignotubers) to regenerate undisturbed, the project aims to restore permanent even-aged native forests. The project is managed by AI Carbon Projects No 3 Pty Ltd, a special purpose vehicle of Australian Integrated Carbon (AI Carbon), an aggregator known for partnering with pastoralists to diversify station income through carbon farming.
