Eversfield Forest Regeneration Project
ERF172867
Project Information:
The Eversfield Forest Regeneration Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located at Eversfield Station, approximately 30km south of the small township of Mungallala in South West Queensland. Registered in March 2022, the project covers a substantial area of 17,974 hectares within the Maranoa region, an area situated roughly between the towns of Mitchell and Charleville.
The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) methodology. Unlike environmental planting, which involves manually planting seedlings, HIR focuses on assisting the regeneration of native forests from existing in-situ seed sources, such as rootstock and lignotubers. To achieve this, the project proponents have committed to ceasing activities that previously suppressed vegetation growth, specifically mechanical clearing and the intensive grazing that historically prevented forest canopy from re-establishing.
Environmentally, the region is part of the Mulga Lands and Brigalow Belt bioregions, characterized by a semi-arid, sub-tropical climate with highly variable rainfall averaging between 500mm and 600mm annually. The landscape typically features red earth soils (Kandosols) and sandy loams, which support the native Acacia (Mulga) and Poplar Box woodlands being regenerated. The land has historically been used for sheep and cattle grazing, a practice that continues under the project but with managed timing and intensity to ensure tree growth is not compromised.
The project is managed by Urana Carbon Farming Pty Ltd, serving as the trustee for the Crook-King Family Trust, with service provision from Climate Friendly Pty Ltd. A notable aspect of this project is its selection of a 25-year permanence period, committing the landholders to maintain the regenerating forest cover until at least 2049.
