Dunmore Project

Project Information:

Dunmore Project is a commercial plantation forestry project located in the locality of Scott River East, approximately 25km east of Augusta in the South West region of Western Australia. Registered in July 2022, the project covers a significant area of 1,181.91 hectares within the Shire of Nannup. The project sits near the Woodarburrup Coast Road, bordering the D'Entrecaste National Park.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. This methodology credits the carbon sequestered by trees planted for commercial timber harvesting. Unlike environmental plantings which are permanent, plantation forestry allows for harvest cycles (typically short-rotation hardwood like Blue Gum or long-rotation softwood) while accounting for the average carbon stocks over time. This project specifically involves the establishment of a new plantation forest, contributing to the region's timber supply while generating carbon credits.

The Scott River region is a high-rainfall zone characterized by a Mediterranean climate, making it highly suitable for agriculture and forestry. The local landscape is historically known for dairy farming and beef grazing, with soils typically consisting of the sandy loams and ironstone gravels found on the Scott Coastal Plain. In recent decades, the area has seen a significant expansion of Eucalyptus globulus (Tasmanian Blue Gum) plantations for the export woodchip market.

The project proponent is Peppermint Estate Pty Limited, a special purpose vehicle owned by New Forests, a major global forestry investment manager. Peppermint Estate was established to hold and manage plantation assets acquired by New Forests' Australia New Zealand Forest Fund 3 (ANZFF3). Interestingly, the "Dunmore" property itself is also known as a working cattle farm and farmstay (Dunmore Homestead), suggesting the carbon project operates alongside or within a mixed-use agricultural property.
