Tulla on Avoca Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Tulla on Avoca Soil Carbon Project is an agricultural soil carbon project located in the Gannawarra Shire of northern Victoria, approximately 20km southeast of Swan Hill. Registered in May 2022, the project covers 770 hectares on the "Tulla" property, which sits within the riverine plains near Lake Boga and the Avoca River.

The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology requires the proponent to measure baseline soil carbon levels and then implement new management activities designed to sequester additional carbon. In this case, the project focuses on altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing to promote better vegetation cover and soil health. By optimizing grazing pressure, the project aims to increase biomass and root growth, thereby drawing more carbon into the soil profile.

The region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 320mm. The landscape typically features the flat floodplains of the Avoca River, where soils are predominantly heavy clays and loams, such as Grey and Brown Vertosols or Sodosols. These soils are naturally fertile but can be prone to compaction; however, they have significant potential for carbon sequestration when managed with regenerative grazing techniques.

The project is undertaken by Tulla Pastoral Co Pty Ltd, acting as the trustee for the Allan Wragge Family Trust, with Carbon Link Operations Pty Ltd serving as the carbon service provider.
