Chipp Carbon Project 2

Project Information:

Chipp Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Tatiara District of South Australia, approximately 18km west of the major service centre of Bordertown. Registered in March 2022, the project covers 110 hectares of agricultural land in a region famously referred to as "Good Country" due to its reliable productivity.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, formally known as the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021. This method credits landholders for measurable increases in soil organic carbon (SOC). The project activities involve a transition to conservation agriculture practices, specifically converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage systems, retaining crop stubble to build organic matter, and applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material nutrient deficiencies. This combination is designed to maximise plant biomass production and protect the soil structure, thereby sequestering more carbon.

The Tatiara region experiences a Mediterranean-style climate with an annual rainfall of approximately 450mm to 480mm. The landscape is characterized by gently undulating plains with soils that typically range from fertile cracking clays (Vertosols) to sandy loams over clay (Sodosols). These soil types are generally responsive to the improved management practices utilized in soil carbon projects, particularly where historical intensive cropping may have depleted organic carbon levels. The project is managed by AgriProve Solutions, Australia's largest developer of soil carbon projects.
