Chipp Carbon Project 3

Project Information:
Chipp Carbon Project 3 is a soil carbon project located approximately 17 kilometers west-northwest of Bordertown in the Tatiara District of South Australia. Registered in March 2022, the project covers 73.38 hectares of agricultural land in a region widely known as "Good Country" for its reliable mixed farming capabilities. The area is predominantly utilized for broadacre cropping, including wheat, barley, and canola, as well as livestock grazing for sheep and cattle, which aligns with the project's operational integration into an existing farm system.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which incentivizes landholders to adopt new management practices that sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the soil. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the proponent must demonstrate a measured increase in soil organic carbon stocks over time compared to a baseline. Specific activities implemented for this project include the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, the retention of crop stubble to protect topsoil, and a conversion from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices.
Environmentally, the project sits within a temperate Mediterranean climate zone, with Bordertown averaging approximately 480mm to 500mm of rainfall annually. The landscape in the Tatiara District is characterized by variable soil types, commonly featuring sandy loams or clay loams over clay subsoils, as well as areas of "gilgai" cracking clays. These heavier clay soils are particularly responsive to soil carbon sequestration efforts when management practices are optimized to retain moisture and biomass.
