Barwick Carbon Project 4

Project Information:
Barwick Carbon Project 4 is a Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration project located approximately 7km northeast of Kaniva in the West Wimmera region of Victoria. It was registered in March 2022 and covers 129.52ha.
Soil organic carbon projects involve modifying agricultural practices to increase the storage of carbon in the soil. This methodology requires rigorous baseline soil sampling and ongoing measurement or modelling to calculate carbon sequestration over time.
The West Wimmera region is well-known for its mixed farming operations, particularly broadacre cropping and livestock grazing. The area experiences a semi-arid, winter-dominant rainfall climate, and the local agricultural soils are primarily composed of sandy loams over heavy, self-mulching cracking clays.
This project aims to increase carbon in the agricultural soil system by applying specific synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material deficiencies, as well as retaining stubble after crops are harvested.
Interestingly, this specific site is part of a broader "Barwick Carbon Project" aggregation led by the proponent AgriProve and the local landholder. This overarching project recently achieved one of Victoria's largest soil carbon credit issuances to date, successfully generating over 10,000 ACCUs. AgriProve notably utilises a unique success-fee model for these projects, allowing partnering farmers to adopt regenerative practices without upfront financial risk.
