Jarrega Environmental Planting Project
ERF170453
Project Information:
Jarrega Environmental Planting Project is a large-scale ecological restoration initiative located on the 'Jarrega' property near Warradarge, approximately 260km north of Perth in Western Australia. Situated within the Shire of Coorow, roughly 30km southeast of the town of Eneabba, the project covers over 2,000 hectares of land that was historically utilized for dryland cropping and grazing operations.
Registered in February 2022, the project operates under the "Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings" methodology. This involves the permanent establishment of mixed native tree and shrub species on land that has been clear of forest cover for at least five years. The project aims to achieve a stocking density sufficient to meet "forest cover" definitions while restoring the landscape's natural biodiversity.
The region experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The site is situated on the Northern Sandplains, featuring deep sandy soils that differ significantly from the heavier clay soils found further inland in the Wheatbelt. These conditions support the restoration of Banksia woodlands, a critical habitat for threatened fauna such as Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo.
A unique feature of this project is its ownership and management structure; the property was purchased by Greening Australia, with the project managed by its subsidiary, Canopy Nature Based Solutions. Beyond carbon sequestration, the site hosts a "SeedX" native seed production area designed to address national seed supply shortages. The project also emphasizes social co-benefits, having engaged local First Nations groups, including the Badgebup Aboriginal Corporation, to assist with the planting of over 1.4 million seedlings.
