VP8 Landfill Avoidance

Project Information:

VP8 Landfill Avoidance is an Alternative Waste Treatment (AWT) project located at the Visy Gibson Island facility in Murarrie, approximately 12km northeast of the Brisbane CBD in Queensland. Registered on May 25, 2021, the project is situated within a major heavy industrial zone adjacent to the Brisbane River and the Port of Brisbane. The region experiences a subtropical climate with high rainfall, particularly in summer, and the local terrain is characterized by alluvial clay soils and reclaimed land typical of a river delta.

The project operates under the Carbon Farming Initiative-Alternative Waste Treatment methodology. This method credits the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions achieved by diverting mixed solid waste, such as commercial and industrial refuse, away from landfills, where it would otherwise decompose and release methane. Instead, the waste is processed into a combustible fuel substitute, often referred to as Process Engineered Fuel (PEF), which is used for energy recovery.

This specific project is integrated into the operations of the Visy Paper mill (the "VP8" likely referring to Paper Machine 8 or a specific building on-site). The facility diverts over 33,000 tonnes of waste annually to produce renewable fuel for the mill's boiler, effectively displacing approximately 17,000 tonnes of coal per year. Northmore Gordon Pty Ltd acts as the project proponent, managing the carbon abatement activities and the issuance of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for the site.
