'Chifley Carbon Project

Chifley Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located approximately 25km north of Bathurst in the Central Tablelands region of NSW. It was registered in April 2021 and covers 284.36ha.

Soil carbon projects under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology involve implementing new eligible agricultural management activities to build soil carbon. Standard requirements include establishing a baseline carbon level through rigorous soil sampling, and using approved models and measurements to estimate sequestration over time.

The Bathurst area is known for mixed agricultural land use, particularly sheep and cattle grazing alongside forage production and cropping. The region typically experiences moderate rainfall and features highly variable soils, commonly consisting of acidic red and yellow duplex soils (chromosols) as well as clay loams.

This project increases carbon in soil in the agricultural system by altering the stocking rate, duration or intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve soil health. As an additional note, in July 2026, the project varied its method to transition from the 2018 soil carbon methodology to the updated 2021 determination. The project is managed by AgriProve, one of Australia’s leading soil carbon project developers.
