Wyloo Station

Project Information:
Wyloo Station is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) carbon project located in the Shire of Ashburton in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Situated approximately 116 kilometers south of Pannawonica and 158 kilometers west of Paraburdoo, the project covers a vast area of 188,831 hectares. The region is historically significant for pastoralism, having transitioned from sheep farming to cattle grazing over the last century.
The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which involves regenerating permanent native forests on land where regrowth has been suppressed for at least 10 years. In this context, the primary suppression agent is livestock grazing. By managing the timing and extent of grazing, often through fencing, rotational grazing, or partial destocking, the project aims to allow native vegetation (such as Mulga and other acacia species) to regenerate from in-situ seed sources like rootstock and lignotubers.
The local environment is characterized by a hot desert climate (BWh) with high temperatures and irregular rainfall, often driven by summer cyclones. The average annual rainfall is generally low (approximately 200-300mm), supporting hardy vegetation like spinifex and acacia shrublands on red sandy loams and shallow stony soils.
An interesting aspect of the project is the station's history. Wyloo Station was owned by the Pensini family from 1976 until 2001, at which point the property was split; the eastern portion became "Cheela Plains" (still run by the Pensini family), while the western portion retained the Wyloo Station name. The project proponent, AIC Projects (WA) Pty Ltd, is a subsidiary of Australian Integrated Carbon, a major service provider in the sector. It is worth noting that while "Wyloo" is also the name of Andrew Forrest’s mining company (Wyloo Metals), the pastoral lease itself is a distinct entity with a long history of grazing adaptation in the Pilbara.
