Bamford Carbon Project

Project Information:

Bamford Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located near the rural settlement of Finniss, approximately 55km southeast of Adelaide and 13km north of Goolwa in South Australia. Registered in November 2020, the project covers a project area of roughly 169 hectares on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The project operates under the 2018 Soil Carbon methodology, which requires the measurement of increases in soil carbon stocks over time. Unlike model-based methods, this approach relies on physical soil coring to establish a baseline and verify subsequent gains. The specific activity undertaken to drive these gains is altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing. By optimizing how livestock graze, the project aims to improve pasture cover and root depth, thereby drawing more carbon into the soil profile.

The Finniss region is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with a mean annual rainfall of approximately 426mm. The landscape typically supports mixed farming and grazing operations. Soils in the "Finniss Land System" are variable but often feature sandy loam or loamy sand surface layers overlying clay subsoils. These texture-contrast soils can be susceptible to erosion, making improved ground cover through managed grazing a valuable ecological co-benefit alongside carbon sequestration.
