Project Information:

Western Australian Rangelands Conservation Initiative Site #15 is a Human-Induced Regeneration project located in the Upper Gascoyne region, approximately 80km south-southeast of Gascoyne Junction in Western Australia. It was registered in January 2021 and covers 144,647.62 ha.

Human-Induced Regeneration projects involve establishing permanent even-aged native forests by encouraging natural regrowth on land that has been cleared of vegetation and where regrowth has been suppressed for at least 10 years. This methodology requires the management of suppressors, such as feral animals or livestock, to allow native trees to grow and eventually achieve a forest canopy cover.

The Upper Gascoyne area is known for extensive pastoral lease operations, primarily cattle and sheep grazing. The area is considered a semi-arid environment with low annual rainfall, and the soils generally consist of red sandy clay loams and stony plains.

This project was set up to establish permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers. To achieve this, the proponent, Terra Carbon Pty Limited, manages the timing and extent of livestock grazing and humanely controls feral animal populations. An additional note on the project's history is that in March 2025, a variation was made to the project boundary to remove some of the originally listed areas.
