O'Malley Carbon Project

Project Information:

O'Malley Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 8.5km southwest of Launceston, near the towns of Hadspen and Carrick in Tasmania. It was registered in October 2020 and covers 969.31 ha.

Soil carbon projects utilizing the Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems methodology involve changing management practices to store additional carbon in agricultural soils. This method requires establishing a baseline amount of carbon and conducting subsequent physical soil sampling over time to prove actual sequestration has occurred.

The Meander Valley and wider Launceston region is heavily utilised for primary agricultural production, primarily supporting grazing, mixed farming, and cropping. The area experiences a temperate climate with reliable, moderate rainfall averaging around 680mm annually. Soils in the region vary but typically include productive dermosols, clay loams, and podzolic soils that support strong pasture growth.

This project was established to increase carbon storage in the soil by actively altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of traditional grazing patterns.

An interesting note is that the project is managed by Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd, one of Australia's largest soil carbon developers. The O'Malley Carbon Project is also bundled into a larger, multi-project fixed delivery Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC808228) set up to supply Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to the Clean Energy Regulator.
