Western Australia Rangelands Conservation Initiative Site 12

Project Information:

Western Australia Rangelands Conservation Initiative Site 12 is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia, approximately 75km north-northwest of Carnarvon. Registered in November 2020, the project covers a significant area of roughly 57,265 hectares, typically situated on pastoral leasehold land.

The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which involves regenerating native forests by managing threats that previously suppressed vegetation. In this context, the project activities focus on controlling the timing and extent of livestock grazing and humanely managing feral animals (such as goats) to allow in-situ seed sources like rootstock and lignotubers to regenerate into permanent forest.

The Gascoyne region is characterized by a semi-arid to arid climate with low, irregular rainfall. The landscape typically consists of Acacia shrublands (Mulga) and saltbush on red sandy earth or clayey sand soils. A variation to the project area occurred in May 2023, reducing the registered area; this is often a result of 'gateway checks' where areas unlikely to reach forest cover requirements are removed to ensure credit integrity.

This project is part of a broader aggregated portfolio managed by Terra Carbon, designed to simplify participation for pastoralists by grouping multiple properties under a single conservation initiative.
