Landari PPPA 1

Landari PPPA 1 is a plantation forestry project located in the Central Tablelands region of NSW, with project sites roughly spanning 40km northeast and 40km southwest of the major regional city of Bathurst. It was registered in January 2020 and covers a project area of 741.57 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects involve sequestering carbon by establishing and maintaining new commercial plantation forests, or converting existing short-rotation plantations to long-rotation ones. Standard requirements under the 2022 methodology dictate that newly established plantations must be actively managed for the commercial harvesting of wood products while maintaining minimum tree stocking densities and protecting carbon stocks over the entirety of the crediting period.

The Central Tablelands region around Bathurst and Oberon is well-known for its mixed agriculture, predominantly sheep and cattle grazing, as well as extensive commercial pine forestry operations. The area is classified as having moderate, reliable rainfall of around 720 to 750 mm annually. Soils in this district are typically fertile Chromosols (red and yellow duplex soils) and Dermosols (derived from tertiary basalts), providing an optimal environment for commercial timber growth.

This project was established as part of a broader circular economy and corporate sustainability initiative by the proponent, Group Energy Pty Ltd, which serves as the energy and sustainability arm for the Borg Group. By expanding and utilizing commercial pine forests, the company offsets its emissions and generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) while securing timber supplies for its own manufacturing facilities. The project has undergone a number of administrative adjustments, including an expansion of the project area in February 2022 following a restructure under section 57 of the CFI Act, a participant name change from Landari Pty Ltd to Group Energy Pty Ltd in February 2023, and a methodology update to the 2022 determination in December 2023.
