Landari PPPA 1

Landari PPPA 1 is a commercial plantation forestry project located in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, spanning areas across the Mid-Western and Oberon local government areas. The project's land parcels are spread across the region, with coordinates pointing to locations near Rockley, approximately 35km south of Bathurst, and near Rylstone, roughly 100km north of Bathurst. Registered in January 2020, the project covers a total area of 741.57 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects involve sequestering carbon by establishing and maintaining new commercial plantation forests. Under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, standard requirements dictate that these plantations must be actively managed for the commercial harvesting of wood products. In practice, this means maintaining specific commercial tree stocking densities (often exceeding 800 to 1,000 stems per hectare) and protecting carbon stocks over the crediting period.

The Central Tablelands region is well-known for mixed agriculture, including sheep and beef cattle grazing, alongside extensive commercial pine forestry operations. The area experiences moderate to high, reliable rainfall, typically receiving between 675mm and 900mm annually. The region features highly productive soils such as clay loams, chromosols, and well-drained soils derived from tertiary basalts, which provide an optimal environment for commercial softwood timber growth.

An interesting aspect of this project is its proponent, Group Energy Pty Ltd, which took over the project from Landari Pty Ltd in February 2023. Group Energy serves as the sustainability, energy, and carbon arm of the Borg Group, a major Australian timber and manufacturing enterprise. The "PPPA" in the project name stands for Plantation Pine Products Australia. By establishing new commercial pine forests, the Borg Group creates a circular economy model, offsetting corporate emissions and generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) while securing a vertically integrated raw timber supply for their own manufacturing brands. The project methodology was formally updated from the 2017 determination to the 2022 determination in December 2023, and it lists The Carbon Farming Foundation Ltd as a participating agent.
