Project Information:

Timmering Depression Revegetation 2020 (Revoked) was an environmental planting project located in the locality of Timmering, Victoria, approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Rochester and 30 kilometers west of Kyabram. Registered in February 2020, the project covered an area of approximately 490 hectares within the Goulburn Valley region. The project area sits within a landscape traditionally used for intensive irrigated agriculture, including cropping and grazing, which characterizes the surrounding land use of the Campaspe Shire.

The project operated under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM methodology. This method involves establishing permanent native forests on land that was previously cleared for agricultural use. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the plantings must be permanent (maintained for 25 or 100 years) and achieve specific forest cover thresholds, such as a canopy cover of at least 20% and a height of at least 2 meters. This specific project utilized a mix of native species aimed at restoring local biodiversity while sequestering carbon.

Environmentally, the region is classified as semi-arid to temperate, typically receiving between 400mm and 500mm of rainfall annually. The "Timmering Depression" itself is a significant natural drainage feature, a low point in the landscape that historically functioned as a freshwater marsh connecting to the Loddon River floodplain. Consequently, the soils in this specific project area are likely heavy clays and loams associated with ephemeral wetland systems, contrasting with the lighter sandy loams found in some surrounding agricultural blocks.

The project was managed by Kilter Pty Ltd (Kilter Rural), an asset manager known for regenerating farmland and water assets. A notable aspect of this site is its dual purpose; beyond carbon sequestration, Kilter Rural has historically utilized environmental water flows to restore the Timmering Depression, successfully triggering the germination of native swamp plants and attracting birdlife such as the Australasian Bittern. On June 11, 2025, the project was revoked under Section 30 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Rule 2015. A Section 30 revocation is a voluntary action initiated by the proponent, indicating that Kilter Pty Ltd chose to withdraw the project from the ACCU scheme, potentially to pivot towards other natural capital valuations or land management strategies.
