Tredegar Plantation Project

Project Information:

Tredegar Plantation Project is a plantation forestry project located in the locality of Quindong, approximately 15km south of the town of Bombala in southern New South Wales. Registered in December 2019, the project covers a sizable area of 688.75 hectares. The site sits near the Victorian border within the Snowy Monaro Regional Council area, a region heavily utilized for both commercial forestry and grazing.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2017. This methodology awards carbon credits for establishing new plantation forests or converting existing short-rotation plantations to long-rotation ones. In this specific case, the project focuses on establishing a new plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products. This activity sequesters carbon in the growing trees and wood products while providing a sustainable timber source.

The Bombala region is characterized by a cool temperate climate with reliable rainfall, making it a hub for New South Wales' softwood timber industry, particularly Radiata Pine. The local environment typically features soils of granitic or sedimentary origin, often with sandy topsoils and clay subsoils, though pockets of fertile basaltic soils are also found in the wider Monaro district. The project is managed by Southern Cross Forests Pty Ltd, a significant player in the region's forestry sector, which manages a large estate of softwood plantations across the Southern Tablelands and South West Slopes.
