Tredegar Plantation Project

Project Information:
The Tredegar Plantation Project is a commercial forestry initiative located in the locality of Quidong, approximately 15km south of Bombala in the Snowy Monaro region of New South Wales. Registered in December 2019, the project covers approximately 689 hectares of land formerly used for agriculture. The project operates on the historic "Tredegar" property, which was a long-held family grazing station featuring frontage to the Delegate River before its sale and subsequent conversion to forestry.
This project utilizes the Plantation Forestry methodology, which credits the carbon sequestered by establishing new timber plantations (greenfield sites) or converting existing short-rotation plantations to long-rotation. Unlike environmental plantings which are permanent conservation forests, this method allows for commercial harvesting; carbon is accounted for in the trees, debris, and the long-term storage of wood products after harvest. The project has entered into an optional delivery contract with the Clean Energy Regulator, securing the option to sell over 38,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to the Commonwealth.
The Bombala region is a major hub for Australia's softwood timber industry, characterized by a cool temperate climate and reliable rainfall that supports robust tree growth. The landscape in this area is typically undulating with soils derived from basalt and granite, historically supporting a mix of native bushland and sheep grazing prior to the expansion of forestry estates. The conversion of the Tredegar property from a grazing operation to a plantation highlights the region's shifting land-use dynamics toward carbon and timber production.
