Project Information:

Toowoomba Waste Management Centre - Landfill Gas Project - 2019 is a waste methane abatement project located in the suburb of Cranley, approximately 7km north-west of the Toowoomba city centre in Queensland. The project operates within the Toowoomba Waste Management Centre on Hermitage Road, a major waste facility serving the Darling Downs region. Registered in January 2020, the project transitioned to LGI Limited as the proponent in mid-2020, operating under the Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas methodology.

The project involves the active extraction of landfill gas (methane) from both legacy and active waste cells using a system of vertical wells and collection pipes. While the primary objective of such projects is to prevent potent methane from venting into the atmosphere by combusting it, this site integrates a 1MW renewable energy power station. A notable feature of this installation is its "behind-the-meter" configuration, which allows the electricity generated from the waste gas to directly power the nearby Wetalla Water Reclamation Facility, one of the council's most energy-intensive assets.

The Toowoomba region is situated on the crest of the Great Dividing Range, known for its distinct "Garden City" climate which is temperate and sub-humid with an average annual rainfall of approximately 700–900mm. The area is geologically renowned for its deep, fertile red volcanic soils (Ferrosols) and dark cracking clays (Vertosols), which support the extensive agricultural land use of the surrounding Darling Downs. LGI Limited has reported that since the power station's commissioning in late 2022, the project has generated significant numbers of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and reduced carbon emissions equivalent to planting millions of seedlings.
