Project Information:
BSL Cell Modernisation Project for Reduction Line 2 (Revoked) is an Industrial Electricity and Fuel Efficiency project located at Boyne Island, in the Gladstone region of Central Queensland. It was registered in January 2019 and covers an unknown project area size. The project was undertaken by Boyne Smelters Limited, which operates Australia's second-largest aluminium smelter.
Industrial Electricity and Fuel Efficiency projects aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by improving the energy efficiency of existing energy-consuming equipment. This is typically achieved by modifying, installing, removing, or replacing equipment to lower overall electricity or fuel consumption.
The Boyne Island and greater Gladstone area is an established industrial and port hub, while the surrounding regional land is largely used for beef cattle grazing, small-scale agriculture, and forestry. The region experiences a sub-tropical climate with warm to hot summers and mild, dry winters, receiving an average annual rainfall between 800mm and 1,000mm. Local soils vary across the region, including fine-grained alluvial sediments, tertiary clays and gravels, as well as coastal acid sulfate soils.
This specific carbon project was designed to improve energy efficiency within the smelter's Reduction Line 2. However, the project was officially revoked on 26 October 2022 under section 30 of the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) Rule.
