WeAct Plantations Tasmania #1 (Revoked)

Project Information:

WeAct Plantations Tasmania #1 (Revoked) was a plantation forestry project located in the Northern Midlands region of Tasmania, approximately 25km south of Westbury. Situated in the foothills of the Great Western Tiers, the project area covered roughly 75 hectares. It was registered on March 14, 2019, but was subsequently revoked on August 4, 2022.

The project operated under the Plantation Forestry methodology, specifically focusing on the conversion of short-rotation plantations to long-rotation plantations. In this context, short-rotation forests, typically harvested every 10-15 years for woodchips, are managed differently (often through thinning or pruning) to allow the trees to grow for a significantly longer period (at least 10 additional years) before harvesting. This extension allows for greater carbon sequestration in the larger trees and long-lived wood products like sawlogs, compared to the rapid turnover of pulpwood crops.

Environmentally, the region surrounding the Great Western Tiers is characterized by high rainfall, often exceeding 800mm annually, which supports vigorous vegetation growth. The soils in this area are typically fertile Ferrosols or Dermosols, derived from basalt and dolerite, making them well-suited for both forestry and grazing operations. The project was managed by WeAct Pty Ltd, a carbon project developer active in the Tasmanian forestry sector. The project's revocation under Section 30 of the CFI Rule indicates a voluntary withdrawal, suggesting the proponent or landholder chose to exit the scheme or restructure the project assets.
