Project Information:

Catchment Conservation Alliance - Great Barrier Reef Initiative Site #6 is an avoided clearing project located in the North Burnett region of Queensland, approximately 45km southwest of the town of Monto. Registered in July 2018, the project covers a substantial area of 4,659 hectares. The surrounding region is predominantly used for cattle grazing and forestry, activities that historically involved the periodic clearing of native vegetation to maintain pasture productivity.

The project operates under the Avoided Clearing of Native Regrowth methodology. This method is designed for landholders who have the legal right to clear native regrowth (forest that has regenerated after previous clearing events) but choose instead to retain and protect it. By maintaining the forest cover, the project avoids the emissions that would have occurred if the vegetation were cleared and allows the trees to continue sequestering carbon. To be eligible, the land must generally have a history of being cleared for grazing or cropping at least twice in the past.

Environmentally, the North Burnett region is characterized by a sub-tropical climate with summer-dominant rainfall, typically averaging around 700mm to 750mm annually. The landscape features a mix of alluvial, clay, and solodic soils, which support the brigalow and eucalypt woodlands typical of the area. As part of the broader "Catchment Conservation Alliance," this project likely aims to provide co-benefits beyond carbon sequestration, such as reducing sediment runoff into the Burnett Mary catchment, thereby contributing to the health of the Great Barrier Reef. The proponent, Terra Carbon Pty Limited, is frequently associated with GreenCollar, a major environmental markets developer in Australia.
