Lannercost Re-establishment (Revoked)

Project Information:

Lannercost Re-establishment (Revoked) was a plantation forestry project located approximately 25km west of Ingham in North Queensland. Registered in July 2018, the project covered a significant area of 743.52 hectares within the Hinchinbrook Shire. The region is characterized by a wet tropical climate with high rainfall, typically exceeding 2,000mm annually, and fertile soils ranging from alluvial loams in valleys to clay loams on slopes, ideal conditions for vigorous vegetation growth.

The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2017. This methodology incentivizes the establishment of new plantation forests or the conversion of existing short-rotation plantations to long-rotation systems to increase carbon sequestration. As a "Re-establishment" project managed by HQPlantations, the activities likely involved replanting timber stocks, specifically Southern Pine hybrids (Caribbean and Slash pine cross), following commercial harvesting events. These hybrids are favoured in Queensland's sub-tropical forestry estates for their resilience to "swampy" conditions and wind.

On July 11, 2024, the project was revoked under section 30 of the CFI Rule, which refers to a voluntary revocation application by the proponent. This indicates that HQPlantations chose to withdraw the project from the ACCU scheme, a decision that can stem from various strategic reasons, such as land divestment, changes in commercial viability, or a desire to exit the administrative obligations of the carbon market while continuing standard forestry operations. The Lannercost State Forest area remains an active commercial forestry zone, frequently listed in HQPlantations' operational updates.
