Gondwana Native Forest Reveg

Gondwana Native Forest Reveg is an environmental planting project located in the Mid West region of Western Australia, approximately 25km south of Mingenew and near the small locality of Yandanooka. Registered in June 2018, the project encompasses a significant area of 5,969 hectares. The region is historically dominated by broadacre agriculture, specifically wheat cropping and sheep grazing, which characterizes the land use prior to the project's commencement.

The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings (FullCAM) methodology. This involves establishing permanent plantings of mixed native tree species on land that was previously cleared for agricultural use for at least five years. The methodology requires planting at a density sufficient to achieve forest cover, typically necessitating stocking rates of at least 200 to 400 stems per hectare, to ensure the trees reach a height of at least 2 meters and a canopy cover of 20%.

Environmentally, the Yandanooka area sits within a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate zone, receiving an average annual rainfall of approximately 340mm, predominantly in winter. The soil landscape in this part of the Mid West is variable but often features red shallow loams, sandy duplexes, and gravelly soils which act as the substrate for the native revegetation.

An interesting aspect of this project is its scale and location within a historical "soldier settlement" region known for intensive clearing for wheat production in the early 20th century. The proponent, Gondwana Property Pty Ltd, appears to be affiliated with Gondwana Carbon, an entity focused on developing natural capital projects that integrate carbon sequestration with biodiversity outcomes. The project name "Gondwana" reflects the ancient supercontinent, a common motif in Australian conservation efforts emphasizing the deep geological and biological history of the landscape.
