CO2 Australia - Human-Induced Regeneration Project - Stage 6 (Revoked)

Project Information:
CO2 Australia - Human-Induced Regeneration Project - Stage 6 (Revoked) is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the Parkes Shire local government area, approximately 40km west of Peak Hill in New South Wales. It was registered in November 2017 and covers a remarkably small area of just 1.04 hectares.
Human-Induced Regeneration projects generate carbon credits by establishing permanent native forests through assisted regeneration. Standard requirements for this methodology dictate that the land must have been cleared of native vegetation and had its regrowth suppressed for at least 10 years prior to the project's commencement. The project relies on in-situ seed sources, such as rootstock and lignotubers, and requires the cessation of suppressive activities to allow the forest to recover. For this specific project area, the primary activity undertaken was the strict exclusion of livestock.
The Central West region surrounding Parkes and Peak Hill is heavily utilised for extensive agriculture, predominantly broadacre cropping and livestock grazing, alongside a rich local history of gold and copper mining. The area experiences a semi-arid climate with moderate, evenly distributed rainfall averaging around 550mm annually. Soils in the district typically consist of residual agricultural soils, varying from fertile alluvium plains to deeper clay subsoils.
An interesting note about this project is its tiny 1.04-hectare size, which is highly unusual for an HIR methodology that typically spans vast pastoral tracts. Ultimately, the project was revoked on June 23, 2022, under section 30 of the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) Rule before its 25-year permanence period could be completed. Following the revocation, the proponent formally updated its registered participant name from CO2 AUSTRALIA LIMITED to CO2 AUSTRALIA Pty Ltd in December 2024.
