CO2 Australia - Human-Induced Regeneration Project - Stage 5 (Revoked)

CO2 Australia - Human-Induced Regeneration Project - Stage 5 (Revoked) is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the Parkes local government area in the Central West region of New South Wales. It was registered in November 2017 and covers a remarkably small area of 1.46 hectares. The region surrounding Parkes is widely known for its robust agricultural activities, primarily broadacre cropping, as well as sheep and cattle grazing. The area experiences moderate rainfall and features highly productive soils, predominantly Red Chromosols, which have a strong texture contrast and are commonly known as the "workhorse of agriculture" in New South Wales.

Human-Induced Regeneration projects involve establishing permanent, even-aged native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, such as rootstock and lignotubers. A standard requirement of this methodology is that the land must have been previously cleared of vegetation, with natural regrowth actively suppressed for at least 10 years prior to the project commencing. To facilitate the required regeneration, the specific project activity implemented here was the exclusion of livestock.

An interesting note about this specific project is that it was officially revoked under section 30 of the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) Rule on 23 June 2022. Additionally, the proponent’s name underwent a variation on the public register, formally updating from CO2 AUSTRALIA LIMITED to CO2 AUSTRALIA Pty Ltd on 11 December 2024.
