CO2 Australia - Human-Induced Regeneration Project - Stage 5 (Revoked)

CO2 Australia - Human-Induced Regeneration Project - Stage 5 (Revoked) is a Human-Induced Regeneration project located approximately 5km south of Peak Hill in the Central West region of New South Wales. It was registered in November 2017 and covers an area of 1.46 Ha.

Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) projects involve establishing permanent native forests by changing land management practices to allow native vegetation to recover naturally. The standard methodology requirements dictate that the land must have been previously cleared of vegetation and its regrowth suppressed for at least 10 years prior to the project commencing. Regeneration is achieved by relying on in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers.

The Peak Hill area is historically renowned as an agricultural district, heavily utilized for sheep and cattle grazing as well as grain cropping like wheat, barley, and canola. The region experiences a hot semi-arid to dry humid subtropical climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 550mm to 561mm. The local environment features diverse but tough soils, generally ranging from grey clay loams to hard-setting red ironstone and slating clays.

This project was established to facilitate native forest regrowth through the specific project activity of livestock exclusion. Interestingly, this project was officially revoked on June 23, 2022, under section 30 of the CFI Rule. Following the revocation, the project proponent updated its participant name from CO2 AUSTRALIA LIMITED to CO2 AUSTRALIA Pty Ltd in December 2024.
