Wesfarmers Energy Efficiency Upgrade Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

Wesfarmers Energy Efficiency Upgrade Project (Revoked) was an industrial energy efficiency initiative registered in April 2016. Unlike land-based carbon projects that occupy a specific geographic area, this project was designed as an aggregated activity spanning multiple commercial facilities across Australia. The project proponent, Wesfarmers Limited, is the parent company of major Australian retailers including Bunnings, Kmart, Target, and Officeworks (and previously Coles).

The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Industrial Electricity and Fuel Efficiency) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits emissions reductions achieved by improving the energy efficiency of industrial equipment. Specifically, this project focused on installing Variable Speed Drives (VSDs). VSDs are control devices used on electric motors, typically in HVAC or refrigeration systems, that allow the motor to operate at variable speeds rather than a constant full speed, significantly reducing electricity consumption during periods of lower demand.

Given the nature of the project as a technology rollout across existing built infrastructure, standard environmental metrics such as soil type, rainfall, or regional land use are not applicable. The project involved a partnership with City Facilities Management (Aus) Pty Ltd, a company known for providing long-term facilities management and energy services to Wesfarmers' retail subsidiaries, particularly Coles. The project was voluntarily revoked in March 2018 under section 30 of the CFI Rule, suggesting a strategic pivot or a consolidation of energy reporting frameworks by the proponent.
