Catchment Conservation Alliance-Great Barrier Reef Initiative (Revoked)

Project Information:
Catchment Conservation Alliance-Great Barrier Reef Initiative (Revoked) is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) carbon project located in Central Queensland, approximately 100km west of Clermont and 120km northeast of Barcaldine. Registered in April 2016, the project covered a massive expanse of 55,839 hectares. The project was situated within the Fitzroy Basin catchment, a critical area for managing water quality flowing into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.
The region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with highly variable, summer-dominant rainfall. The landscape typically consists of open woodlands featuring Acacia (such as Gidgee or Mulga) and Eucalypt species. The soils in this area are generally a mix of red earths (Kandosols) and cracking clays (Vertosols), which are common in the Desert Uplands and Brigalow Belt bioregions. The primary land use in the surrounding area is extensive cattle grazing on native pastures.
The project operated under the Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) methodology. This method involves regenerating permanent native forests on land where vegetation growth has been suppressed for at least 10 years, typically by livestock grazing or mechanical clearing. By ceasing these suppression activities, often through fencing and managing grazing pressure, the project aimed to allow native timber to regenerate, thereby sequestering carbon.
Notably, the project was revoked on August 20, 2025, under Section 30 of the CFI Rule. A Section 30 revocation is voluntary, initiated by the proponent, rather than an enforcement action by the regulator. The proponent, Terra Carbon Pty Limited (an entity associated with GreenCollar), managed this project as part of a broader initiative designed to deliver co-benefits, such as reducing sediment runoff to protect the Great Barrier Reef, alongside carbon abatement.
