Brisbane Airport Electric Bus Upgrade (Revoked)
ERF103330
Project Information:
Brisbane Airport Electric Bus Upgrade (Revoked) was a Land and Sea Transport project located at Brisbane Airport, approximately 14km northeast of the Brisbane CBD in Queensland. Registered in April 2016, the project operated until its voluntary revocation in July 2022. The project area encompasses the transport infrastructure of the airport precinct, situated on reclaimed coastal land at the mouth of the Brisbane River.
The project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Land and Sea Transport) Methodology Determination 2015. This emissions avoidance methodology credits activities that reduce the emissions intensity of transport operations, such as replacing existing vehicles with more efficient alternatives or switching fuel sources. In this specific instance, the project involved replacing a fleet of diesel-powered buses with electric vehicles to service the "landside" transport route, which ferries passengers between the domestic/international terminals and the remote AIRPARK facility.
The Brisbane Airport region experiences a subtropical climate with high rainfall, averaging around 1,000mm to 1,200mm annually. The local geography is characterized by coastal lowlands and wetlands, with soils originally consisting of estuarine clays, sands, and alluvial deposits, though the specific site is heavily modified reclaimed land developed for aviation infrastructure.
Notable for being the first of its kind in Australia, the project saw Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) introduce a fleet of 11 electric buses in 2018. These buses were BYD Toro models, supplied by Carbridge, which featured a range of 600km and were estimated to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 250 tonnes per year compared to the previous diesel fleet. The project was revoked on 12 July 2022 under Section 30 of the CFI Rule, which indicates a voluntary revocation requested by the proponent, likely due to the maturation of the project or a shift in corporate reporting strategy.
