Brisbane Airport Electric Bus Upgrade (Revoked)
ERF103330
Project Information:
Brisbane Airport Electric Bus Upgrade (Revoked) was a land and sea transport project located at the Brisbane Airport precinct, approximately 14km northeast of the Brisbane Central Business District in Queensland. It was registered in April 2016 and operated across an unspecified area size, as the project was tied to the commercial aviation and industrial transport footprint of the airport rather than a specific land boundary.
Land and sea transport projects generate carbon credits by reducing greenhouse gas emissions across vehicle fleets. This methodology involves replacing existing high-emission vehicles or changing their primary energy sources to lower-emission alternatives. Standard requirements typically involve tracking the fuel and electricity consumption of the upgraded vehicles to calculate the net emissions savings compared to baseline industry standards.
The Brisbane region experiences a subtropical climate classified as having moderate to high rainfall. Given the airport's location on the coast near the mouth of the Brisbane River, the surrounding terrain largely consists of reclaimed land with soils predominantly made up of coastal sands, alluvial deposits, and marine clay.
This project was set up to transition the airport's landside passenger transport operations by replacing its existing diesel fleet with 11 BYD Toro electric buses. This initiative made Brisbane Airport the first airport in Australia to roll out an all-electric bus fleet. The new vehicles feature a driving range of 600 kilometres on a single charge and utilize kinetic power regeneration technology. The upgrade was estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 250 tonnes each year, which is the equivalent of removing 100 cars from the road. Despite the physical success of the bus rollout, the formal carbon project was revoked on July 12, 2022, under section 30 of the CFI Rule.
