Sandalwood Carbon Project

Project Information:

Sandalwood Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located approximately 26km southeast of Naracoorte in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. Registered in October 2015, the project currently spans an active area of 87.64 hectares, having undergone area variations in 2018 and 2020 where portions of the project land were amended and removed. The broader Naracoorte and Lucindale area is a prominent agricultural district recognized for sheep and cattle grazing, cereal cropping, dairy farming, and viticulture. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with reliable winter rainfall averaging around 480mm annually. The local environment is largely defined by its ancient limestone base and terra rossa soils, which can naturally be deficient in certain trace elements and minerals.

Soil carbon projects operating under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology aim to build carbon stocks in agricultural soils by undertaking new or materially different land management activities. To achieve this, the Sandalwood Carbon Project focuses on altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of livestock grazing. This targeted grazing management helps promote better soil vegetation cover and improves overall soil health. Furthermore, to compensate for the region's naturally mineral-poor soils, the proponent is actively applying nutrients to the land in the form of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material soil deficiencies.

This project also has a well-documented administrative history. In late 2025, the project was officially transitioned from the older 2014 grazing systems soil carbon determination to the updated 2021 measurement and models methodology. Concurrently, the project's proponent changed from Corporate Carbon Solutions Pty Ltd to Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd. Additionally, the project is backed by an active Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC102388) secured during the Clean Energy Regulator's November 2015 auction, underscoring a long-term commitment to delivering Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to the Commonwealth.
