Project Information:
DAC-2015-14 is a Native Forest from Managed Regrowth project located approximately 80km south-east of Charleville in South West Queensland. It was registered in September 2015 and covers an area of 5,607.73ha.
Native Forest from Managed Regrowth projects involve allowing native vegetation to regenerate on land that was previously comprehensively cleared for pastoral use. This requires ceasing the mechanical or chemical destruction of regrowth so that the vegetation can ultimately reach "forest cover," typically defined as having a height of at least 2 metres and a crown cover of at least 20%.
The Charleville and Murweh Shire region is primarily known for extensive pastoral grazing operations involving cattle and sheep. The area is classified as semi-arid, experiencing roughly 400 to 500mm of average annual rainfall, while soils generally consist of red earths, sandy loams, and clays typical of the Mulga Lands.
This project establishes permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, such as rootstock and lignotubers. Interestingly, the project's original proponent, Devine Agribusiness Carbon Pty Ltd, was a pioneer in Queensland carbon farming before being acquired in 2021 by GreenCollar, Australia's largest environmental markets investor.
