Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Grassy Hut (Revoked)
ERF101579
Project Information:
Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Grassy Hut (Revoked) was an environmental planting project located in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, approximately 10 kilometers north of the town of Ouse. Registered in July 2015, the project covered a relatively small area of 31.85 hectares. The project was situated in a region traditionally defined by sheep and cattle grazing, as well as forestry operations, utilizing land that had been cleared of forest for at least five years prior to the project's commencement.
The project operated under the Carbon Farming (Quantifying Carbon Sequestration by Permanent Environmental Plantings of Native Tree Species using the CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool) Methodology Determination 2012. This methodology involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree species (such as eucalypts and acacias) at densities sufficient to achieve forest cover. The primary goal is to sequester carbon in the growing biomass, modelled using the Reforestation Modelling Tool (RMT) rather than direct field measurement.
Environmentally, the Ouse region sits in a distinct rain shadow caused by the western highlands, resulting in a significantly drier climate than much of western Tasmania. The area typically experiences a semi-arid to moderate rainfall classification (approximately 500–600mm annually). The soils in this part of the Derwent Valley are often derived from dolerite or sandstone, typically manifesting as duplex soils with clay subsoils or podsols, which can support dry sclerophyll forest vegetation when not cleared for pasture.
A notable aspect of this project is its revocation status. It was revoked on August 28, 2017, under section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011. Section 33 specifically refers to a "voluntary revocation" where no Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) have been issued. This suggests that the proponent, Australian Integrated Carbon Financial Services (often trading in partnership with Greening Australia under the "Biodiverse Carbon" banner), elected to withdraw the project before it generated credits, possibly due to land tenure changes, operational viability, or portfolio restructuring.
