Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Nurcoung (Revoked)
ERF101581
Project Information:
Biodiverse Carbon Conservation Nurcoung (Revoked) was an environmental planting project located in Nurcoung, Victoria, approximately 45 kilometers west of the regional centre of Horsham. Registered in July 2015, the project covered an area of nearly 187 hectares in the West Wimmera region. The project operated under the Carbon Farming (Quantifying Carbon Sequestration by Permanent Environmental Plantings of Native Tree Species using the CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool) Methodology Determination 2012.
The project was situated in the interface between the productive Wimmera agricultural district and the Little Desert National Park. Consequently, the local landscape is characterized by a mix of dryland cropping (cereals, pulses) and livestock grazing. The environmental conditions in this transitional zone typically feature a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 400-500mm. Soils in the Nurcoung area are variable, often consisting of sandy loams or solodic soils associated with the nearby aeolian sand deposits of the Little Desert, rather than the heavy cracking clays found further east in the Wimmera.
The project activities involved establishing permanent plantings of native tree species on land that had been cleared of forest for at least five years. The methodology used the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) Reforestation Modelling Tool to estimate carbon sequestration. However, the project was revoked in August 2017 under section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011. Section 33 allows for the voluntary revocation of a project declaration by the proponent, typically provided that no carbon credits (ACCUs) have been issued, suggesting the project did not reach the stage of credit generation. The proponent, Australian Integrated Carbon Financial Services Pty Ltd (now Australian Integrated Carbon), is a significant developer in the sector, and "Biodiverse Carbon Conservation" appears to be a naming convention used for a series of their aggregation projects.
